"What a Son Needs from His Dad" by Michael O'Donnell

What a Son Needs From His Dad: How a Man Prepares His Sons for Life

What sort of man do you want your son to eventually become?  Have you thought about it?  Made a list of traits that you'd like your grown son to exhibit and then developed an action plan mean to inspire them?

That's how this book prompted me to react.  O'Donnell uses research and scripture to describe the type of men God plans for our sons to be and then gives examples and descriptions of how men can guide their sons toward this ideal.

The best aspect of this book is twofold:  in planning and goal setting for your son you are being intentional about your time and so it is not wasted, and you absolutely must be living out the edicts that you are trying to teach, so your own spiritual life will be enriched.  There is nothing fluffy about this book, and it provides a great deal of very useful, practical information about 'how-to' do a great variety of things with your son.

In a way, the best aspect of this book is also the worst.  What a Son Needs from his Dad  is so chock full of information that it is like reading a textbook; it is well researched, well prepared, and full of quotes from knowledgeable, famous people, but at times I had to stop and further absorb the information I had just read before continuing.  There is quite a lot of information to take in, and if read properly, the reader will have a great deal of self-evaluating and planning to do.  In addition, there are several questions at the end of each chapter designed to make you delve deeper into each topic.

If you're a man ready to step up and take the necessary leadership role in raising your son, then this is the book for you.

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.
