Free Saeed!

Free Saeed

Pastor Saeed Abedini, an American citizen, has been imprisoned in Iran for over a year for the crime of being a Christian. {more:http://beheardproject.com/saeed}

In recent negotiations with the government of Iran over their nuclear program, his plight was left unresolved by our administration. We cannot, we will not, let this stand. As members of the Body of Christ, when one member suffers we all suffer. Our brother is suffering…and we must enter into that suffering along with him and his family to seek God’s power to free him. We ask all people of all faiths to join us in calling for an end to this injustice.

YOU can help!

  1. I propose the single loudest outpouring of support via social media to free Saeed in recent memory and perhaps in the history of the church.
  2. HERE is the Facebook EVENT page - join us there!
  3. On WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 4, every Christian with a platform, great or small, will feature Saeed on it with the demand that our government use it’s God given power for good to secure his release.
  4. If you have a Facebook page, you have a platform.
  5. If you have a Twitter account, you have a platform.
  6. If you have a Blog, you have a platform.
  7. If you have an Instagram account...you get the idea!
  8. Use the hashtag: #freesaeed and/or #savesaeed on all your platforms.
  9. Our scattered voices can be ignored, but if we can come together across denominational and political lines as one voice the church may break prison chains once again.
  10. We need every single Christian to spread the word to friends, family and any media outlets.
  11. Pastors, feature this on your websites and blogs.
  12. Bloggers, we need it on your front page.
  13. Brothers & sisters, we need your Facebook status & even your profile pic.
  14. We welcome any ideas to further this cause and we encourage your participation and promotion.
  15. This is an historical moment for the church to come together for something that’s close to God’s heart - human life and dignity.
  16. Please feel free to copy this content or modify this content, and post it as your own on your own media!

Click-to-Tweets Ready for You to Use!

  • On Dec 4, raise your voices in support of Pastor Saeed Abedini. Pray for him and his family. #freesaeed #savesaeed {click to tweet}
  • @BarackObama We respectfully request you release Saeed Abedini as an act of mercy and friendship! #freesaeed #savesaeed {click to tweet}
  • Our brother is suffering…and we must enter into that suffering with him and seek God’s power to free him. #freesaeed #savesaeed {click to tweet}

The Mission

1. AGREEMENT: There’s much we all disagree on, but over this issue we'll unite our voices to demonstrate agreement & use the hashtag #freesaeed and/or #savesaeed on Dec. 4th
2. AWARENESS: We want our governing officials to know, though Saeed Abedini may not be of interest to them he is to “us” (see #1) and therefore as elected officials working “for the people" we want it to be their priority too. Also, because President Hassan Rouhani حسن روحانی has both FB & Twitter accounts, we want him to be aware that Saeed is not forgotten nor insignificant, and we want his immediate release.
3. PRAYER: This is an opportunity to pray for our imprisoned brother. God moves through the prayers of his redeemed people (Acts 16:25-26). None of the above is a magic formula. Assuming by adding more voices to beg/plead with God as if he needs convincing because of his stubborn unwillingness to bless, is nothing short of paganism & grossly misrepresents the God of the bible. This God, is a Father who lovingly gave this broken/sinful world his greatest treasure (John 3:16), not because they were asking, but because he is Good. So, motivated by loving trust in Him, may we in agreement humbly/boldly pray (Heb 4:16). Perhaps, He who delights in blessing, feeding hungry mouths & setting captives free, may once again move to open prison doors by moving the hearts of leaders. The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will. - Proverbs 21:1

Inspired Wednesday -

Origami Owl’s Living Lockets are very creative, but they seem pretty straightforward, right? I mean, you choose a locket, you fill it with the charms and/or plates that you want, attach any danglies or extras, and there you go.

Except that Aspen Tucker, the sponsor of our fabulous Origami Owl giveaway, has made that even more unique.

Many of the O2 items can be purchased in two versions: plain or with added crystals.  The lockets and some of the charms have this option.  Generally, I’m a rather plain girl.  I don’t wear sequins or many bright colors and I’m not much for the spotlight, but every once in a while It’s nice to dress up a bit. That’s why I think Aspen’s idea is so much fun.

Aspen took one of the lockets with the embedded crystals on the outside and made it have two distinct looks.  She put her stamped plate in backwards, so that from the back you see the plate and displayed word only.  From the front, then, you see the charms that she’s chosen set against a metal backdrop.

This allows you two completely distinct options within the very same locket.  How great is that?  You can change out what you put into your locket every time you wear it – or you can just turn it around and go with your other favorite look.

How much simpler can it be?

"The God Puzzle" by Valerie Ackermann

The God Puzzle is a colorful, easy to use tool to help you communicate to your child the rich truths about God, His ways, His will and His love. The God Puzzle will help you address doctrinal themes of the Christian faith in a kid friendly way, present Bible lessons in an interactive way that will hold the child's attention and deliver quality teaching with no preparation needed. 75% of children leave the church when they leave home. Something isn't working. Sunday School isn't doing it all. Kids need answers, good ones. And they need them from you, the parent. This book enables you to give them simple, clear answers.

What makes The God Puzzle unique?
  • ready made discussion questions for parent to ask their child in each lesson
  • can be done at any pace that works with your family . . . every night, once a week, 10 minutes here, 30 minutes there . . . it fits into realistic family life
  • puts the pieces together for a child to understand God, the Bible, and the Christian faith
  • in each lesson the responds to the truth so they understand their relationship to God is personal and life transforming
  • any parent, whether they know nothing, or a lot about God can start teaching their child today with no prep
  • deep theology put into language a child can understand
  • deeply Biblical, each lesson points to Christ
  • put in an order that starts with creation, and teaches the Bible as one story that all points to Christ
  • child stays engaged by filling in blanks, crosswords, drawing, matching and using their Bibles as they learn

The premise of this book is an important one:  to teach kids about how the entire Bible fits together.  We often teach individual Bible stories to little ones, but do we show them how far and wide and intricate the love story of the Bible really is?  How it’s not a bunch of separate stories but our history as God’s created and chosen people and how He has been patiently loving us since the time of Eden?

With that goal in mind, the chapters in the book walk kids step-by-step through a study of the important beliefs of Christians, and that’s a distinct difference from what I expected: it’s not a walk through the Bible, it’s a walk through God’s love story to us.  There is a great deal of scripture in each lesson; some for the kids to look up, some to think about, some to pray about, some to ponder, some to copy.  The scripture references do not go in either Biblical or chronological order, but are pulled out according to the topic that they address.  I think that this trait alone bumps up the difficulty level of this book.

The readers are not unpacking just one verse, but instead studying how various parts of the Bible all support God’s plan of salvation for His people.  If the kids are not familiar with their Bibles, these lessons will be a bit time-consuming  as there are lots of scripture references to find, but then again, becoming familiar with the Bible is also a very good thing.

Each chapter is a lesson and takes about four pages of the book.  There is an activity for the kids to do in nearly every lesson – something like a word puzzle or something to color.  There are also review or discussion questions located at the end of each chapter.

I have only one big concern with this book.  While the lessons come straight from scripture, we know that different people interpret those scriptures differently - and one of the biggest differences among Protestants is how baptism is handled.  The God Puzzle takes a decidedly Baptist view on the issue, which may be very confusing for Methodists or those with similar ideas.  For those people, I'd recommend being prepared with your views and scriptural basis for why you believe what you do and be ready to discuss it thoroughly.  Isn't that basically what we're supposed to do, anyway?

According to the author, this book is geared for ages 7 to 12.  My Big Helper is eager to get started, and she’s 8 – but I do think that the lessons are very meaty and deep.  That’s a good thing – but it may be too much to do one lesson in one sitting.  I can see this book being a great resource for an upper elementary or middle school youth group.  It could be fun to have different groups of kids looking up different scriptures and then sharing their thoughts with the whole group - think-pair-share style.  I also thought of many art and extension activities that might help the lessons to stick for visual or kinesthetic learners.

As a bonus, the back of the book contains a list of scripture verses according to topic that kids can look up to find out what the Bible has to say about given things.  Worrying?  Scared?  There's verses there for you.

The God Puzzle is a fantastic resource for parents at home and for young youth groups.  This book tackles the Bible in a way that even adults sometimes miss - and it shows how every piece of the Bible fits together like a puzzle to make up God's plan.  As adults, we need to be studying this.  As parents, we need to be teaching this to our children.  We cannot neglect the big picture look at the fine details of God's plan.

This is the perfect resource to help you do it.

GratiTuesday - It's the Little Things

Sometimes it’s the little things that mean a lot.

My birthday was last week (enter my Happy Birthday giveawayhere!) and my family kindly took me to one of my very favorite restaurants for dinner.

I like Champps for several reasons:  the food is always wonderful, the wait staff kind, they have great meals for kids, and the patio area is quiet and sunny.

My husband offered to take me wherever I wanted to go, though, and as I thought through my options, I decided to stick with Champps – and it didn’t hurt that they would give me a free entrée through their email club.  It may have been my birthday, and I appreciate my generous husband, but there’s something fun about redeeming a good coupon – especially when it’s as tasty as Champps’ food.

When we arrived, I asked Carmen, our waitress, about the details of the ‘birthday special.’  She informed us that Champps would comp my dinner up to $18.99.  If I chose something pricier, I could just pay the difference.  I was pleasantly surprised that the dollar amount was that high, and so I had fun looking over some entrees I’ve never tried.  I settled on the Walnut-crusted Chicken.  It sounded yummy.

After ordering, I realized that the patio was not quite as warm as I had thought, and I tried to add a bowl of Southwestern Corn Chowder to my order.  The menu said I could do that for a slight upcharge, and I love a good bowl of soup.  Carmen said that my birthday coupon wouldn’t cover it even though I still fell just within that monetary boundary, but I asked for it anyway.  It was definitely worth the small charge – it was fabulous!

Carmen had recommended the chicken dish that I chose, and it earned its reputation.  I’ve never had anything like it, but I look forward to trying it again.  You could easily share that dish, as well:  with a mound of mashed potatoes topped with grilled veggies and onion straws surrounded by THREE walnut-crusted chicken breasts, two could share it happily.

Carmen was attentive as we ate.  She even brought the dish of oranges that My Little Man expressed an interest in – and a second container of juice for each child.

Near the end of our meal she furtively asked if the kids wanted the sundaes that came complimentarily with their dinner.  I appreciated her tactfulness but agreed that the kids would like to have them.  To my surprise, she brought one for me, too – with hot fudge and walnuts and whipped cream and a cherry on top!  The staff sang to me, as well.  I must admit, I preferred the ice cream to the spotlight, but it was pretty nice to be treated.

When we were ready Carmen brought the check to my husband.  To our surprise, not only was my dinner free, but Our Little Man’s oranges, the second juice, AND my soup!  Carmen took care of all of it for us.

I really appreciate the effort that Carmen put into serving us.  She could’ve let those charges ride, which would’ve guaranteed her of a certain tip, but instead she forsook the certainty of that to give us a special birthday dinner.  I know my husband – he tipped her based on the total before the freebies, not after, but she couldn’t be know that.  I think that’s pretty cool.

I felt very special, sitting at my favorite table in the sunshine, people watching and enjoying a fantastic dinner with my family.  Knowing that it wasn’t costing us an arm and a leg was even better.

The best part, though, was knowing that our dinner would be tasty and our service pleasant.  We’ve never experienced any trouble at Champps, and other wait staff members have been just as generous.  To me, the service can make or break a dinner, and it’s extra special to go to a place that feels like home.  Where people treat you as if they know you.  Where you know you’ll be welcomed warmly.

That may seem like a little thing.  After all, it was just dinner out.  One meal.  But Carmen’s kindness and generosity stood out and was the like the cherry on my sundae – a sweet ending to a wonderful meal.

Can’t wait to go again.

Origami Owl Review & GIVEAWAY!

When I was a little girl I loved watching my mom’s mother’s ring.  It was sparkly and pretty and had all of our birthstones on it, so when My Big Helper was born and I headed back to work, I hinted rather pointedly to my husband that I wanted a ring with her birthstone on it.

I received one soon after, and I loved wearing it.

And then Our Little Man was born.

Suddenly I wasn’t so excited to wear my ring anymore.  It was still beautiful, of course, and I liked that reminder of my firstborn, but I felt as if I was leaving out my son, and I disliked that guilty feeling.

So I was wildly excited when I discovered Origami Owl.  This young company sells completely customizable jewelry, the main hook being their “Living Lockets.”  These round lockets have transparent front and backs with magnetic clasps.  What makes them special is the charms that you can put inside.  The charms are pewter and many are hand painted.  The charms come in a huge variety of shapes and finishes so that you can fill your locket with symbols that represent you.  Some of the options available are symbols for letters, food, faith, hobbies, careers, family, etc.

Origami Owl takes designing seriously, and so there are more options available.  The lockets come in five different finishes: silver, brushed gold, black matte, chocolate, and rose gold.  You can also attach larger items that dangle to put on your chain, like keys.  Round metal plates come in different finishes and are stamped with a variety of words.  These fit inside the lockets to provide a backdrop to the charms.

The Origami Owl designers have thought of everything.  There are long and short chains, fine ones and fancy ones.   There is even a line of chains that puts a small Living Locket over your heart for those special symbols that mean the most.

I personally love that I can customize my jewelry so completely.  I can include all aspects of my life in my locket – my faith, my family, my love of books and art.  I don’t have to stop there, though.  As I change and grow, as God brings new things into my life, I can change what I put into my locket.  It’s as easy as popping open the locket and dropping in a new charm.

And for such a young company, Origami Owl is heading in a good direction.  The company began when a fourteen-year-old girl started selling homemade jewelry as a way to save money for her first car.  With the support of her family, they took her successful backyard enterprise and turned it into a multimillion dollar company, choosing to sell their products through home-based “jewelry designers” so that other women could realize their dreams, too.

I received my first Origami Owl necklace from one of these designers – Aspen Tucker.  Aspen is passionate about Origami Owl and the many creative ways that the Living Lockets can be worn.  She’s even created a brand new way to wear them!  (More about that on Wednesday.)

Some other important things to know about O2:

  • You can open the lockets and adjust the contents yourself.  It's as simple as opening a magnetic cabinet door.  You don't need any special tools and can be finished in seconds.
  • Origami Owl is accepting Christmas orders through December 15th.  If you'd like to order a personalized Christmas gift, you have two weeks to get that order in!

Aspen wants everyone to know about these awesome products – and so she’s  generously giving away one of the bracelets that Origami Owl launched as a brand new line of products just a few weeks ago!  These, too, can be customized to suit you.  The locket can dangle or be set into the chain like a watch.  It comes in two different finishes, silver and gold, and special danglies can be attached to the chain.

If you’d like a chance at winning your very own, brand-new Origami Owl bracelet, enter using the widget below.  The winner will be announced here and notified via email on Monday, December 9th and will have 24 hours to reply or a new winner will be chosen.
