Origami Owl Review & GIVEAWAY!

When I was a little girl I loved watching my mom’s mother’s ring.  It was sparkly and pretty and had all of our birthstones on it, so when My Big Helper was born and I headed back to work, I hinted rather pointedly to my husband that I wanted a ring with her birthstone on it.

I received one soon after, and I loved wearing it.

And then Our Little Man was born.

Suddenly I wasn’t so excited to wear my ring anymore.  It was still beautiful, of course, and I liked that reminder of my firstborn, but I felt as if I was leaving out my son, and I disliked that guilty feeling.

So I was wildly excited when I discovered Origami Owl.  This young company sells completely customizable jewelry, the main hook being their “Living Lockets.”  These round lockets have transparent front and backs with magnetic clasps.  What makes them special is the charms that you can put inside.  The charms are pewter and many are hand painted.  The charms come in a huge variety of shapes and finishes so that you can fill your locket with symbols that represent you.  Some of the options available are symbols for letters, food, faith, hobbies, careers, family, etc.

Origami Owl takes designing seriously, and so there are more options available.  The lockets come in five different finishes: silver, brushed gold, black matte, chocolate, and rose gold.  You can also attach larger items that dangle to put on your chain, like keys.  Round metal plates come in different finishes and are stamped with a variety of words.  These fit inside the lockets to provide a backdrop to the charms.

The Origami Owl designers have thought of everything.  There are long and short chains, fine ones and fancy ones.   There is even a line of chains that puts a small Living Locket over your heart for those special symbols that mean the most.

I personally love that I can customize my jewelry so completely.  I can include all aspects of my life in my locket – my faith, my family, my love of books and art.  I don’t have to stop there, though.  As I change and grow, as God brings new things into my life, I can change what I put into my locket.  It’s as easy as popping open the locket and dropping in a new charm.

And for such a young company, Origami Owl is heading in a good direction.  The company began when a fourteen-year-old girl started selling homemade jewelry as a way to save money for her first car.  With the support of her family, they took her successful backyard enterprise and turned it into a multimillion dollar company, choosing to sell their products through home-based “jewelry designers” so that other women could realize their dreams, too.

I received my first Origami Owl necklace from one of these designers – Aspen Tucker.  Aspen is passionate about Origami Owl and the many creative ways that the Living Lockets can be worn.  She’s even created a brand new way to wear them!  (More about that on Wednesday.)

Some other important things to know about O2:

  • You can open the lockets and adjust the contents yourself.  It's as simple as opening a magnetic cabinet door.  You don't need any special tools and can be finished in seconds.
  • Origami Owl is accepting Christmas orders through December 15th.  If you'd like to order a personalized Christmas gift, you have two weeks to get that order in!
  • Shipping is one flat rate based on the amount of your order.  You pay $5.95 for orders under $100 or $7.95 for orders over $100, and your order will be shipped straight to your house.
  • Your product usually arrives in your mailbox about one week from the day you ordered it.
  • Aspen, our sponsor for today's post, will do fundraiser parties and donate a percentage of her commission to your favorite charity or organization.
  • Origami Owl does Jewelry Bars, or home parties, and hostesses earn free products.
If you want to know more, Aspen can answer all of your questions!  You can write to her here.

Aspen wants everyone to know about these awesome products – and so she’s  generously giving away one of the bracelets that Origami Owl launched as a brand new line of products just a few weeks ago!  These, too, can be customized to suit you.  The locket can dangle or be set into the chain like a watch.  It comes in two different finishes, silver and gold, and special danglies can be attached to the chain.

If you’d like a chance at winning your very own, brand-new Origami Owl bracelet, enter using the widget below.  The winner will be announced here and notified via email on Monday, December 9th and will have 24 hours to reply or a new winner will be chosen.

If you’d rather go ahead and start shopping, Aspen has opened an online party just for us!  Remember, Christmas is only three weeks away!  O2 products make very thoughtful gifts.  Go here to check out the Origami Owl catalog online and begin shopping.

I am receiving a free Living Locket and chain for reviewing purposes in exchange for an honest review.  For more, see my Full Disclosure policy.

It's My Birthday! Giveaway

When I was a little girl I had a storybook about a girl named Beth.  She woke up one morning, dressed in a pretty blue jumper, and headed out for a walk around her neighborhood.  As she walked she came across many of her neighbors who needed help - and she did so, always with a slight smile on her face.

At the end of the story you find out that it's Beth's birthday, and all of her neighbors throw her a surprise party.

I never cared too much about the party part, but I always liked that she wanted to celebrate her birthday by giving it away and sharing it with her friends.  So, while I'm announcing that I have just celebrated another birthday - we won't go into just how many that makes - here's my birthday giveaway for you, just for fun.

These are simple things, but those are my favorites, so that's what I'm sharing with you.  The winner of this giveaway will receive:
  • Stones for Bread by Christa Parrish (I enjoyed learning how to bake bread from my great-grandmother and grandfather.)
  • A new Lindt Excellence Dark Chocolate Coconut Bar (I don't like dark chocolate OR coconut, but this is my new favorite chocolate.  It's AMAZING.)
  • A package of salted almonds.  Yum.
  • Body spray.  My Little Man always says that I 'smell good' when I use it.
  • A pair of soft spa socks.  My feet are always cold in the winter, and I like these soft ones.
  • Nail polish.  I haven't often painted my nails, but I've been having fun being extra 'girly' with my Big Helper lately.
  • A tube of lip gloss.  I usually have either chapstick or lip gloss in my pocket.  Not sure why ... but it's one of those things I rarely leave the house without, and I liked this perky color.
  • For years, I've carried Sharpies around in my pocket.  Fortunately, they lids are made to fit well.  :-)  I liked the way that these two colors seemed to match so many other things in this package ....
  • A list pad to use the Sharpies on.  I'm a list maker, and pretty paper just makes the whole process more fun.
  • I'm not really mailing you a pumpkin - but since I was born on Thanksgiving and already had it on the table, I thought it looked festive.  No pumpkins will be shipped during this giveaway.  :-)
So there you go. Not quite a list of Oprah proportions, but one that makes me happy, and I hope those little things will brighten various parts of your day, too.  Enter using the widget below, and Happy Birthday from my Nest to yours!

Review & GIVEAWAY of "Loving" by Corin Hughs

Hannah Mattox has Pulmonary Hypertension, a heart disease that prevents her from safely bearing children. Karla Valez is a homeless prostitute who despises the “thing” growing inside her and hopes to kill it in-utero with the drugs that have ruled her life—and buried her painful past—for nearly five years.  Gabriella Greene, founder of the Sanford Crisis Pregnancy Center, finds herself the bridge between these two women.  A time when questions far outweigh answers, there is one most pressing: why would God allow this?

Weaving together the lives of three very different women, Loving will take readers on an emotional journey that reveals one common thread: they each need to surrender to a God who loves.

Loving will grab you by the throat from the very first sentence and it won’t let you go.  After a few chapters you’ll be able to catch your breath, but you’ll be hooked on these characters and their situations long before then.   Each one has a traumatic backstory that keeps you personally involved in their lives.  With Hannah, you’ll be fascinated with her bravery and her mother’s fight to give her a normal life.  With Gabriella you’ll cheer on the underdog and want to congratulate her not only on her ability to help others today but on overcoming a difficult Karla is different, for while there is little to commend now, she’ll help you understand how drugs can draw you in, one hour at a time.

Loving is incredibly well written.  The words flow as the plot twists and turns, some foreseen, some not, but all fascinating in their drama and emotion.  I love the way that Hughs starts with a loose cast of characters and draws them tighter and tighter into a cohesive group of players in a major miracle.

I must say that I disliked the ending as much as I loved the beginning, but not because it’s not well written, because it is.  The ending is poignant and precious and will bring you to tears – but it finishes only one character’s story.  Hughs writes with such depth and detail throughout the book, especially in the way that she begins with one character and ends with a different one, that the story feels unfinished to me, but again, not in a bad way.  While I spent several days wondering what happens with those other two major characters, I’m not sure what Hughs intends.  Does she mean to leave you hanging?  Are you meant to determine what you feel would have happened?  Or is there a sequel coming that will continue the stories of these characters?

Personally, I think any of these possibilities would fit.  They are characters on the fringe, and maybe you’re just meant to wonder about them, and maybe even be spurred to action to help the many people in our society who live like that every day.  Maybe Hughs is the next o. henry, skilled at making you debate and question.

Or maybe Hughs is just beginning a series designed to make us aware of health conditions and portions of our society that we rarely think about unless we are forced into contact with them.  These problems may be largely unknown, but the people are people – valuable and in need of help.

Personally, I’m hoping for that third option.  I’d love to have some binoculars to see into Hannah and Grace and Karla's future.  I'd love to continue this walk with them as they make strides along their journey into forgiveness, redemption, and love.

Which would you prefer?  Corin Hughs is generously offering a signed copy of her book Loving to one Nest in the Rocks reader.  Enter using the widget below.

Inspired Wednesday: Lilla Rose Review & Giveaway

I've always had a thing for jewelry.  Love the stuff - always have.  Doesn't matter if it's rings, necklaces, or bracelets, there's something about delicate decorations that fascinates me.

So when I first heard about jewelry for your hair a few months ago, I couldn't wait to try it out!

Lilla Rose is a company that produces just that.  With a huge line of clips in all sorts of colors, themes, and sizes, as well as decorative pins and bands, each Lilla Rose item is beautiful.

I recently received my Celtic Cross flexi-clip - well, about a month ago, and I've worn it every day since.  It looks delicate but is actually very strong.  It stays in my hair well, and there are many things I can do with it.

http://www.anestintherocks.blogspot.com

I've pulled the hair away from my face and clipped it in the back.

I've made a twist with my hair and fastened it all up with my flexi.

http://www.anestintherocks.blogspot.com

This picture came out a bit blurry, but My Big Helper can wear it as a low ponytail.

The absolute best thing about my flexi is that it's so versatile.  I used to leave the house for an all-day trip with a plastic clip in my hair and a band in my pocket, with usually another tucked in a bag somewhere, so I could be sure that I could tame my hair as needed.  With my flexi I don't need anything else.  I can pull some back or, with a bit of twisting, have all my hair up and out of my face - no bands or plastic clips necessary.

I must admit, though, that this didn't happen overnight.  The flexi-clip design is like nothing I've ever seen before, and for this hair-challenged girl, it posed a slight problem in the beginning.  It definitely took some practice to be able to manipulate both sides of the flexi while holding my hair in place, but after a day or two of practicing, I got it figured it out.  Which is not to say that I can do the fancy upsweeps yet, because I can't, but then again, I never could, so if the flexi somehow teaches me, that'll just be an extra happy bonus.

I'm already dreaming of which flexi I'll choose next.  They come in different sizes so you can do different things with them, and I can't wait to try out some more fun hairstyles.  Besides, I'm about to get a haircut, and then I'll have less to work with, so I'm going to need a smaller one, right?  wink.

Sue Ellen is my Lilla Rose consultant, and she'd like to be yours, too.  She's generously giving one Flexi-Clip away to one of you!  I can't wait to hear which flexi you pick.  If you are already one of Sue Ellen's customers or you've not yet tried a Lilla Rose product, you are eligible for this giveaway!  Sign up with the widget below.

Or, if you're ready to try out your own Lilla Rose product now, click through to my party page.  If you'd like to browse first, this is a great place to get started.

Have you tried Lilla Rose?

Inspired Wednesday - Establishing Routines & AiO Giveaway!

On Monday I shared with you what our regular school days look like.

Today I want to tell you more about our devotional schedule.

When My Big Helper was little-little, I tried to have devotions in the morning.  I tried to have devotions in the morning, but every morning ended up different, depending on where and when we were heading out that day.

Eventually we ended up having devotions at night, and that worked for years.

Then our schedule changed again.  With one child in school and an early bedtime important, we struggled to find a time to read and discuss scripture.

When we moved to full-time homeschooling, I played around with this a little, and now my study Bible lives on our kitchen table.

We try to read at breakfast, and some days that works.  Others, when we're rushed to leave, we might not make it -but it's still there at lunchtime.

This has been different than anything we've done before, but we like it.  The kids often ask me to read more, and we have the rest of mealtime to talk about what we've read.  We're not so rushed, and this gives us time to discuss what we're learning.

I've also noticed My Big Helper making connections between what we're reading and what she's reading on her own.  She's starting to tell me when she remembers hearing a particular verse before, or connect it to something that's happened.

Sometimes schedules need to be fluid.  Sometimes we need to watch for teachable moments.  Sometimes, we do what works, even when it's a bit different.

This is what works for us.  How do you make crazy schedules work?

Adventures in Odyssey is giving away a free sample download of their book, 90 Devotions for Kids.  Click over here to download your own!

AiO is giving away one copy of 90 Devotions for Kids to one of you!  Use the widget below to enter.

Inspired Wednesday - "The Cloak" Review & Giveaway

I love to read, and my very favorite books have always been mysteries.

A biblical mystery by Sally J. Ling

Which means that getting an email from an author automatically makes me do a happy dance.  Getting emails offering books is even better.  Especially when they're mystery books.  :-)

Sally J. Ling, a Floridian writer of history's mysteries, has penned a new what-if style story about the cloak of Jesus.  She asks what might happen if His cloak still has the power to heal - and did so today.

Writer Shea Baker stumbles upon an old tassel while attending an art gallery exhibit and soon is caught up in a mystery spanning thousands of years and multiple continents.  Can he find the truth about these ancient threads before someone gets hurt?  What if the healing cloak of Jesus were to emerge from its century’s old hiding place and made available to heal the world? Would it be a blessing as some feel, or a curse that could throw the world into political, theological, economic, and logistical chaos?

I love fictional debates about Biblical artifacts.  It's Indiana Jones at its most adventuresome - pure adventure, great debate, unsolved mystery, and fun speculation.  This particular story took me a few chapters to get hooked, but for a very zany and personal reason:  the main character's name sounds feminine to me, and it took me that long to get it through my head that he was a middle-aged male.  Once that happened, I was caught up in the story.

Ling used Baker's lack of Biblical knowledge to explain the history of Jerusalem, a popular Bible story, and information about other famous artifacts.  In this way the reader gains real knowledge in an unassuming way.  The set-up to the story also appealed to me, Baker's first name aside - the cast of characters initially made up a wide pool which narrowed as connections were made and the story progressed.  This kept the energy high and the suspense growing.

Ling's writing style and premise puts me in mind of Harry Kraus' The Stain.  With a plausible backstory for the cloak's resurfacing and entertaining characters, this is a great read - but it's only the beginning.  With several parts of the plot left open-ended and a new mystery turning up on Baker's desk, I can't wait to read the next Shea Baker mystery.

Author Sally J. Ling doesn't only write Biblical mysteries, however; as a former reporter, much like Baker, she's written Floridian history books and many articles. She's also a generous author - today she's giving away digital copies of her book Spies, Root Beer, & Alligators, a book for nine- to twelve-year-olds, to the first ten people who sign up for her newsletter.  Click here to go to sign up for her Preferred Readers newsletter and you'll receive directions for how to get your free e-book.

What's your favorite book genre?  Do you and your kids like to read the same ones??

Last week Chris at Campfires & Cleats shared reminded us of how important the leadership role of our husbands are - and how wonderful they are when they lead us!  It's too easy to overlook their contributions to our families, especially in the midst of dirty laundry mountains and a culture that often mocks our men. To find out more, visit

Art Pages Review & Giveaway!

This page contains affiliate links.  Clicking on them helps to support our homeschooling efforts.

As my Big Helper's interest in art grew over the last few months, I've found several wonderful resources for teaching her how to do the art she likes.  Nothing can replace See the Light's Art Class DVDs for methodically teaching technique!

I haven't figured out how to teach her about famous works of art yet, though - at least, not in a un-researched, easy-on-Mommy way.

Until now.

It really couldn't be easier.  Erica Johns at Classical Composer just added Fine Art Pages to her previous musical offerings.  This set of 25 pages is almost like a mini-study guide in poster format.

Each page features a famous work of art at the top, followed with a few tidbits of information about the artist, when it was created, what medium was used, where it can be seen now, and a fun fact.

With big print and only the most important information to remember, these are great for printing off and hanging around the house.  It won't take any work on my part to stick these up and watch the kids read them.

After that, we could talk about them, move them around, compare the art pieces to others, or discuss which we'd most like to see - or to recreate.  These could even be a springboard for more independent study on the kids' part - they could find out more about each artist or what sorts of other things s/he created.

Since My Big Helper knows very few pieces of famous art besides van Gogh's Starry Night and was already comparing the new retro swirls in our local McDonald's to that painting, I can't wait to see what she comes up with when she can identify more art.

You can see a sample of these Fine Art Pages here.  You can also find a free sample of a composer resource here.  There's even a Claude Monet freebie.  Erica Johns is very generous!

These Fine Art Pages will retail for $14.95 but are currently on sale for this week only for $9.95, so if this is a resource you'd like to utilize, click over and make your purchase today!

Classical Composers is not just something that you download, however; it's something you join and have ongoing access to as resources are created, artists are spotlighted, and new features are added.  Erica Johns is giving one free membership to a lucky A Nest in the Rocks reader!

Enter via the widget below.  Good luck!

Inspired Wednesday - Do You Know the Human Body Detectives?

Sometimes you happen across a new resource that you know will change the way you teach.  Discovering the Human Body Detectives has done that for our home.

This set of books for kids, written by Dr. Heather Manley, is a lot like a sci-fi-meets-non-fiction-storybook.  In each book a set of sisters, Merrin and Pearl, go on a Human Body Adventure in which they magically shrink and travel around inside a friend while learning about a specific system of the body.

These books are very well written.  They are chock full of scientific information, but it's presented in a fun and exciting way as the girls travel throughout the body, learning how it works.  The colorful pictures add detail and pizzazz, while side conversations reflect Dr. Manley's natural take on medicine and include the importance of healthy eating and exercise.

Why, though, do I think that these are so great?  What makes them stand out from, say, that other set of books that was turned into a cartoon with a traveling vehicle?

A few things.  First, the girls are supportive throughout the stories.  There's no name-calling, no flippancy, and no sarcasm.  The characters work together and are kind.

Secondly, the books are a great length - long enough to carry some weight and depth but short enough to be friendly.  These won't scare those who are still afraid of the length of a chapter book but have the meat necessary for science lovers.

The pictures add a lot.  Not only do they illustrate the story, but they illustrate the concepts - both by adding vision to the text but by illustrating the scientific principles.  This makes it easier to understand for visual people like me.  :-)

There are also fun facts, extra pictures, jokes, and additional information at the end of the story.  For those people who really want more, it's possible to add real curriculum to these stories by purchasing lesson plans from the author to accompany each book.  This could be a big part of your health curriculum for body systems.  What better - and more fun - way to learn them?  I'll definitely be doing this!

Osteoblasts cover

Dr. Manley has just released the fourth book in the series, called Osteoblasts to the Rescue (about the skeletal system).  The others are The Lucky Escape (digestive system), Battle with the Bugs (Immune system), and A Heart Pumping Adventure (the circulatory  system).

I'm looking forward to reading these great books with my kids.  While we try to eat healthy foods and exercise, I know they'll be more aware of how these things fit into their overall health after reading the Human Body Detective books.

Keep reading for a great giveaway sponsored by Dr. Manley!

Great Big Christmas Giveaway: Organizing the New Year

I have a not-so-secret love of office supplies.

I can be found every August wandering the aisles of Target, admiring the larger-than-usual selection of pens and paper.  I admire the array of ink colors and the wide selection of Post-it notes, but my absolute favorite are the planners.

Not just any old calendar, but the ones that have spaces for everything.  The ones that have a month-at-a-glance pages and then break down each week into big, beautiful boxes always enthrall me.  Maybe it's the teacher in me, but I love the idea of having a place to write down our plans, and now that we're homeschooling, this is more important than ever.

That's what first caught my eye about Tatorbug Creations.  Stephanie is now making custom planners!

I've seen planners all over the 'Net.  Selling for crazy prices, some allow you to change the column headings, but for the most part they're like computer software - what you see is what you get.

Stephanie builds in more choices than that, however, and it can even be personalized with pictures just for you!  She beats the prices of those other planners by far, too.

I'm seriously jealous about today's giveaway.  Can I enter, too?

Stephanie at Tatorbug Creations is giving away one custom planner today!  She'll work with you to design the organizational tool you need.

Great Big Christmas Giveaway from My Nest to Yours

I have only one very favorite part of Christmas: singing Silent Night with my family by candlelight on Christmas Eve.

As a kid we'd get all dressed up, head to church early for good seats, and I'd wait excitedly for that last, best song.  There was never any question about our plans for that evening, though the traditions continued after church.

When I was really little we had a "work party" after church.  We'd tear the bread for stuffing, chop fruit for the salad, and Dad would clean the turkey.  As we got older, he started making the turkey dance.  That was always so funny!

My favorite part of the after-church time came when he would read a cute book to us - the same one, every year - about a young angel who got lost from heaven on her way to greet the baby king.  She gave away all of her heavenly treasures and had to be cared for humans.  I loved snuggling up next to Dad while he read.

Now, my family continues those traditions in our own way.  We never miss church on Christmas Eve, and we still sing Silent Night by candlelight there.  We've been known to head to the church hours early so that we could get the perfect seats for the kids to be able to see everything that would happen.  The wonder on their faces as the candlelight spreads throughout the sanctuary is amazing.  I'll never forget the looks on their faces as they were aware of the beauty for the very first time.

Of course, Christmas isn't really about 'pretty,' and the first one in a smelly stable probably wasn't.  So after church we have a birthday party for Jesus, and we invite whomever we find.  We look for those who have nowhere else to go.  The kids and I bake a birthday cake, and we sing Happy Birthday with lit candles, and then we munch on appetizers, cake, and hot chocolate by the fire.  Before bedtime, my husband reads a picture book that shares the true meaning of Christmas with the kids - usually a different one each year.

So with these traditions in mind, I've put together a collection of items for you to enjoy.  These things say "Christmas" to me!  One winner will receive a copy of Finding Our Way Home and Wrapped in Rain, both stories of forgiveness and redemption (the point of Christmas, is it not?), a bag of assorted classic Godiva Truffles, a set of Paula Deen recipe cards to share those fabulous dishes you'll be making this month, and (not pictured here) a $10 Amazon Gift Card.
